The Vancouver Canucks will play at home in British Columbia in the NHL, the Prime Minister of the Canadian province of John Horgan announced on Twitter.

"I can happily confirm that the improved health measures introduced in the coming season mean that matches can be played safely here in BC," writes Horgan.

"Improved health measures"

To reduce travel, the seven Canadian teams in the North American hockey league will play in a separate division and only meet each other during the regular season game.

In the same way, the American teams are divided into three divisions.

Although the season starts next Wednesday, it is still unclear where several of the Canadian teams will play their home games.

Apart from British Columbia, so far only Alberta, with the NHL teams Edmonton and Calgary, has officially approved that NHL matches may be played, reports the news agency AP.

Continued ambiguity about player arenas

Last week, a Manitoba health official announced that the province was working to allow matches in Winnipeg, but officials in Ontario and Quebec, with NHL teams Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal, have not yet commented on whether matches will be allowed.

At Christmas, however, Billy Daly, the NHL's deputy commissioner, announced that the league had reached an agreement with the Canadian provinces concerned and that the country's NHL team could count on playing the home games in their regular arenas.
