Nobody had seen it coming, and least of all Michael van Gerwen himself.

The number one in the world rankings had recently left no situation to document his rediscovered strength - on and off the stage.

Before his round of 16 of the Darts World Cup against the Englishman Joe Cullen, the darts superstar had a tournament average of 107 points and only made one set in his two appearances.

But in the end it was thanks to the weak nerves of his opponent that the number one is still in the tournament.

The Dutchman beat Cullen 4-3.

The Englishman was ahead with 3: 1 sets, awarded a matchdart on the bullseye in the sixth set and another when the score was 2: 1 in the decisive seventh round.

In the final leg, the Englishman didn't hit a triple in twelve attempts and failed because of his nerves.

“He had a chance to beat me and played phenomenally.

I am very happy that he didn't do it in the end, ”said van Gerwen,“ you have to survive moments like this if you want to achieve great things. ”

Favorite dying at the Darts World Cup

With Peter Wright, Michael Smith, Rob Cross, Nathan Aspinall and James Wade, five of the top seven were eliminated at the season highlight in London before the round of 16.

The only remaining member of the group of the best is next to van Gerwen Gerwyn Price, who with a win in the final on January 3rd could also become the new number one in the world rankings.

It would be the first change at the top in seven years.

In January 2014 van Gerwen inherited the legend Phil Taylor.
