Professional soccer player Bryan Cristante has been suspended from a game for blasphemy during a match in the Italian Serie A league.

In the 5-1 away win of the first division club AS Roma against FC Bologna last Sunday, the AS midfielder undoubtedly made a blasphemous statement in the 23rd minute, the league's sports court said.

That would have shown the review of television images, it said without further information.

What exactly Cristante said was not known.

Rome coach Paulo Fonseca will therefore have to do without the 25-year-old Italian on Thursday when his team receives Torino at home.

After the 11th matchday, the Romans are in 6th place in Serie A.

Since 2010, blasphemous offenses can be punished in Italy.

Cristante is not the first convicted in this case.

As early as 2018, after studying video, Rolando Mandragora was withdrawn from Udinese Calcio for "blasphemous remarks" for a game after which he cursed on the pitch.

His statements are in contrast to those transmitted by Cristantes.

“Porca Madonna, Vaffanculo, Dio Cane,” shouted Mandragora in the game against Sampdoria Genoa - an insult to the Virgin Mary and God.

The reason for the outbreak was a parade by Sampdoria keeper Emil Audero.

The referees did not notice, when studying the TV pictures they read from the lips.

There were "no doubts" during the investigation, said Serie A at the time.
