After a series of poor performances crowned by a 4-0 rout on Sunday against Strasbourg, Nantes coach Christian Gourcuff was sacked on Tuesday.

While it is still unclear who will be his replacement, his assistant Patrick Collot must act until the winter break.

Christian Gourcuff, coach of FC Nantes, was sacked Tuesday after a series of poor performances crowned by a 4-0 rout on Sunday against Strasbourg, we learned within the club.

His deputy Patrick Collot must act as interim until the winter break, while several names to take over have circulated in the press in recent days.

Last bow?

If the position is prestigious, many have already burned their fingers: since the arrival of the Kita family at its head in 2007, the club has seen 14 coaches pass on the bench, not to mention the interim.

For Christian Gourcuff, on the other hand, it could be the last bow of a figure of French football.

Coming out of retirement in August 2019 to replace Vahid Halilhodzic three days before the resumption, the 65-year-old coach announced that Nantes would be his last job.

Only six victories for Nantes

While the club will celebrate in the spring the 20 years of its last title of champion of France, FC Nantes points to a worrying 14th place in the Ligue 1 standings, just three points from Strasbourg, 17th and virtual barrage.

After a summer preparation disrupted by numerous cases of Covid-19, the team have been far too inconstant to successfully launch their season, and the expected rebound after the international break in November has not arrived.

A first bright period against Metz (1-1), an encouraging second in Lens (1-1) but a disastrous match in Marseille (1-3) and humiliation against Strasbourg (0-4).

Worse: in all competitions, Nantes has won only 6 victories in 25 matches since January.
