• Second model - we tested the VW ID.4: global electric

  • Test: At the controls of the ID.3, the Golf in electric key

  • Industry: Volkswagen will stop producing combustion models in 2040

With dimensions very similar to those of the seventh generation Golf that

also

maintains

habitability at similar levels (with a 380-liter boot (in the middle of the segment)

, where the car's style changes most is on the front.

It becomes much lower,

following the design guideline that the current Passat inaugurated five years ago.

The headlights are also thinner, which can be attached by a small light strip.

The rear, on the other hand, is the most conservative part.

The name of the car stands out on the tailgate and the double tailpipes, one of them 'false'.

WITH MICROHIBRIDATION AND ECO LABEL

The first version of the Golf 8 that we have had the opportunity to drive fully carries one of the most interesting novelties of the launch range: the light hybrid system (also called mild-hybrid or microhybrid) that Volkswagen calls eTSI and which consists

of a system electric support for the gasoline engine (150 hp) based on a small 48-volt battery that, although it cannot move the car by itself

(that is, it does not have a 100% electric mode), it does help reduce consumption and, with it, emissions.

But it is enough to grant it the ECO sticker of the DGT ... at least, for now.

This technology is the most 'light' of all possible hybridizations, the simplest and cheapest ... but also the one that is least perceived by the driver.

The energy that the system recovers during braking is released during starts and as a (slight) boost during accelerations,

to achieve a 10% consumption saving (which in our test, remained below six liters on the highway and slightly by above seven on mixed routes).

And all without the driver having to worry about anything or notice anything,

beyond the character changes that the

usual driving modes

give the car

: Eco, Comfort, Sport and Individual (optional for 170 euros).

In fact, there is not even a diagram that tells us how this small system works in real time, as with conventional hybrids.

It is, let's say, 'hidden' although most of

the brands that have models with this technology do show diagrams with these energy flows.

For now, the eTSI is the most 'eco' option in the Golf range awaiting the arrival of the 'plug-ins'.

STANDS OUT FOR THE SOFTNESS IN THE DELIVERY

The 1.5 TSI petrol engine is the true heart not only of the Golf 8 range, but also of the entire Volkswagen offering.

Around him are articulated most of the versions and now, in the midst of a plummet of diesel, it is also the protagonist of the demand.

And it does not lack virtues.

In the 150 horsepower version

there is more than enough power

(it is true that it does not have enough if we are lovers of performance), but perhaps more remarkable is

the smoothness in the

power

delivery

, which fits perfectly with the dynamic character of the car .

Because this Golf is,

once in operation, very similar to the previous one.

Balanced and compliant, although for an extra dose of emotions it would be necessary to go to the versions 'with surname' (GTI, GTE ...).

It is a car effective enough to give us driving enjoyment at high rates and comfortable as a family for long trips.

Everything is easy at your controls, fluid, without blemish, as always in the Golf, with an

interior where the leading role is for the two large digital screens,

which have eliminated a good number of physical controls.

And where others, the case of the electronically operated automatic gear lever, are minimalist.

All this benefits the

ergonomics of the driving position, where it is very easy to find a very comfortable position

and we can mount sports seats in the case of opting for the R-Line finish.

Interior lighting, and this is already common for many new models, offers a wide

palette of colors to choose from: up to 30.

AVAILABLE IN TWO FINISHES

The Golf eTSI is available with the two central finishes of the range,

the Life (31,835 euros) and the R-Line

(with a slightly more sporty touch for 33,400 euros).

The Life version that we were able to test already has a very complete standard equipment, with a

multimedia equipment

with a

10.2-inch screen and a browser included, 16-inch wheels, LED headlights and lights, the striking digital clock box, three-phase climate control. zones

... and a good number of assistants (pedestrian detector with emergency braking, involuntary lane change, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, parking sensors ...).

And, although its usefulness cannot yet be expressed,

it is also capable of communicating with other cars

(that carry the same Car2X technology) to anticipate possible traffic jams or construction sites that may be found on the route.
