Every time the route of a new Tour de France is revealed, the first temptation is to scrutinize how the organization has sought to favor the great local riders on this occasion.

But 2021 marks a clear trend change with respect to the proposal of previous editions.

It will not be a Tour for long-distance climbers like

Thibaut Pinot

and

Romain Bardet

, but one for versatile riders who shine against the clock and in explosive stages.

Especially the first, because for the first time since 2014 the Tour exceeds 50 kilometers of individual time trial, 58 specifically, divided into two stages, the fifth and the penultimate.

And no mountain day will reach 200 kilometers, an anomaly that will undoubtedly generate debate, and there will only be three finishes on high:

Tignes

,

Portet

and

Luz Ardiden

.

There does seem to be a clear nod to another of the local idols,

Julian Alaphilippe

.

The first two stages seem designed for 'Loulou' to change his world champion jersey for yellow.

They are two days in Britain, which the Grand Départ initially planned in

Copenhagen

assumes

(ASO's prudence in the face of the possible consequences of Covid back in June 2021), with finishes in two walls of three and two kilometers that will erase the sprinters of the fight.

Sprinters will be able to quench their thirst for victories during three of the next four stages.

In the middle of them, on the fifth day of the race, appears the first of the individual time trials of the edition, of 27 kilometers.

As an aperitif to the alpine weekend, the longest stage of the last 20 editions of the Tour will serve, 248 kilometers.

The Alps will not be as protagonists as in other editions and will only host two short stages, of 145 and 151 kilometers.

In the first one, on the second Saturday of the race,

Mont-Saxonnex, Romme

and

Colombière

will climb

, with a downhill finish at Le Grand-Bornard.

The second will finish at the top of Tignes, after ascending previous Pré, Roseland and Tignes.

Andorra, the only exit from France

The next test for the men of the general classification will come in the 11th stage, which contains one of the great novelties of the Tour.

That day, Mont Ventoux will be climbed twice and on two different slopes, one of the most emblematic peaks of the Tour that the organization has not included in the route since 2016. The second week of the race will end with the first Pyrenean stage that hosts Andorra (Envalira and Beixalis will be uploaded), in which the only foray outside France of the edition.

After the rest day and a transitional stage, the Tour is heading towards its final fireworks.

In the 17th stage, of 178 kilometers, the climbs to

Peyresourde

, Val Louron and Portet will

be chained in just 60

, in what could be considered the queen stage, although none shines especially above the others.

The last mountain stage will link Pau with Luz Ardiden, with an intermediate pass through the Tourmalet, in just 130 kilometers.

If the Tour is not already decided by then, it will do so on the penultimate stage, a 31-kilometer time trial before the traditional final party on the Champs Elysees in Paris.
