He is the third Reds player to test positive in a week, after new Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara and Senegalese striker Sadio Mané, both placed in quarantine. The 28-year-old, Switzerland's creative engine with Granit Xhaka , had not played in the selection since June 2019 and had notably declared himself unavailable last fall when he was trying to revive with Liverpool.

Placed in quarantine, according to the SFV, the international with 82 caps should miss both the friendly against Croatia on Wednesday and the two League of Nations matches against Spain on Saturday and Germany on Tuesday.
