"La Liga informed Atlético de Madrid at 11:28 pm on Monday that Arsenal's representatives had paid the release clause for Thomas Partey," said the Madrid club in a statement. "The player, as a result, unilaterally broke his contract with our club, which ran until June 30, 2023 ”, continues Atlético.

Partey, 27, reached the Champions League final with the Madrid club in 2016. He has scored 16 goals in 188 appearances in the red and white jersey since 2015. In the opposite direction, Atlético Madrid have recruited in Arsenal ranks Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira on a loan until the end of the season, which would come with a purchase option according to Spanish press.

The club mascot was fired to deal with financial difficulties related to Covid19.

This transfer did not fail to make a few ironic comments when the club announced the same day that it was separating from its mascot to deal with the losses linked to the Covid-19.
