Arsenal have decided to fire Jerry Quy, the man who has played the role of the club's mascot, "Gunnersaurus" for 27 years.

London club playmaker Mesut Özil on Tuesday said on social media that he offered to pay the mascot's full salary as long as he was a club player.

Mesut Özil is perhaps no longer one of the greatest midfielders on the planet, he is nonetheless a player apart.

The Arsenal playmaker stood out on Tuesday afternoon by offering to pay the man's full salary inside the mascot costume.

Jerry Quy, alias "Gunnersaurus" for 27 years, was fired Monday by the London formation, which invokes the economic crisis of the Covid-19.

"Let Jerry keep his job he loves so much"

"I was so sad that Jerry Quy, aka our famous and loyal mascot 'Gunnersaurus' and an integral part of our club, was fired after 27 years," the 31-year-old Turkish player explained on Twitter and Instagram.

"So I propose to reimburse with the full salary of our great green man as long as I am an Arsenal player, so that Jerry keeps his job which he loves so much #JusticeForGunnersaurus."

Arrived in north London in the summer of 2013, Mesut Özil, who has not played a meeting since March, is in contract with Arsenal until next June.

Wave of layoffs at the club

Jerry Quy's dismissal is the latest in a long list of 55 people working for Arsenal who were dismissed in August by the Gunners.

The management of the emblematic London club has advanced the economic environment deteriorated by the current health crisis to justify these departures, which affects all sectors of the club.
