Rublyov's quick break

On the sixth day of the US Open, Andrei Rublev was the first Russian to appear on the court.

The owner of the tenth seeded number met with the last one hundred of the world ranking Salvatore Caruso.

The Italian in his entire career did not reach the fourth round at the Grand Slam tournaments, and the native of Moscow did not allow him to do it this time either.

The match between them lasted only 84 minutes, which is extremely small for a men's duel of three sets.

Rublev won two of them dry, not allowing Caruso to take at least a game.

The Italian showed some resistance only in the second game, which ended with a score of 6: 4.

The Russian played extremely aggressively and allowed his opponent to win only half of the rallies on his first serve.

At the reception, the Italian could not do anything at all - the Russian made 17 aces, while the entire match consisted of only 22 games.

Rublev also recorded 35 actively won draws.

The 22-year-old has at least repeated his last year's result at the US Open and will now try to reach the quarterfinals, as it did in 2017.

To do this, he must take revenge for last year's defeat against Italian Matteo Berrettini.

Rublev has something in common with him at this tournament - they both have not yet lost a single set following the results of three matches.

In his 1/16 final match, last year's US Open semifinalist beat Norwegian Kasper Ruud, spending 123 minutes on it.

Medvedev's victory over the debutant of the majors

In addition to Rublev, another Russian who did not give up a single party is Daniil Medvedev.

In the third round, he spent a little less than two hours to beat the owner of the wild card Jeffrey Wolfe of the United States.

The meeting of the fifth and 138th rackets of the world ended with a score of 6: 3, 6: 3, 6: 2.

The status of a rival, who participated in the Grand Slam for the first time, did not relax Medvedev in the least.

He played an exemplary match in terms of the quality of the game - in the first set, the Russian made only two unforced mistakes, and only ten of them accumulated in the match, while Wolfe thus gave four times as many points.

True, Medvedev failed to retain all the games on his serve.

The American tennis player realized two break points out of four, but this was by definition not enough to win.

The Russian won seven games on someone else's serve.

After the match with Wolfe, Medvedev had to speak about the main US Open coronavirus scandal related to Benoit Per.

The Frenchman was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to a positive test, after which matches were canceled for those players who contacted him.

According to some reports, Peer has been training with Medvedev in recent days, but the Russian tennis player denied this.

“I haven't trained with him at all and I don't know where this information came from.

I don’t know how exactly they check it, like in the accreditation of the tracking chip to see who contacted whom.

At first they thought that I was in contact with him, but this was not.

Most likely, he was just in the same room with him at some point.

I was asked questions, I answered them that he was somewhere far away, and I was wearing a mask.

They told me, "Okay, no problem, just test every day."

It's no problem for me.

I've already passed five tests, all negative.

So it didn't affect me in any way, ”Medvedev told Eurosport.

The rise and fall of Khachanov

Following Rublev and Medvedev, Karen Khachanov could enter the fourth round.

If he succeeded, then for the first time since Roland Garros - 2007, three Russians at once would have entered the second week of the Grand Slam tournament.

Then Igor Andreev, Nikolay Davydenko and Mikhail Youzhny were able to achieve this.

However, Khachanov lost five sets to Australian Alex De Minor, who could be called the most difficult opponent among all the Russians played with.

The 21-year-old tennis player has already entered the fourth round of the US Open and came to New York to defend points in the status of the 28th racket in the world.

Khachanov's problems began in the fourth game of the first set, when he could not put the squeeze on his opponent on his serve and, as a result, missed it.

The Russian failed to recoup quickly, he earned his first break point and realized only at the end of the set, after which he again failed to handle De Minor's reception and gave up the party.

In the second set, Khachanov managed to completely transform and reduce the number of mistakes to a minimum.

Although he had almost no actively won draws, the Russian managed to win six games in a row, and then two more.

One break at the start of the third game was eventually enough to take the lead.

However, then De Minor returned to the level of play that he had at the beginning of the match.

He did not allow himself to lose the ball and practically stopped making mistakes on the serve.

Khachanov, on the other hand, had a real decline - on his own, he almost stopped gaining points.

In the next two sets, he had only nine actively won draws.

Having lost in the fourth installment with a score of 4: 6, the Russian then completely stopped resisting and gave up three games on his serve in the fifth set.

The third round of the US Open remained an insurmountable barrier for Khachanov, but compared to last year, when he was eliminated after the opening match, he was able to earn several rating points.
