This is the seventh time the Briton will start the Italian Grand Prix race from pole position.

But it was a long way off.

The Mercedes driver was only seven hundredths ahead of his teammate Valtteri Bottas, Finland, with McLaren's Carlos Sainz, Spain, in a surprising third place.

Monzabanan is Ferrari's home ground, but it was a failed day for the Italian stable.

Charles Leclerc finished in 13th place and Sebastian Vettel first four places further down the results list.

This is the first time no Ferrari car has been in the top ten in the qualifiers at Monza since 1984.
