The blue, green and yellow flag raised by the Sevilla player Munir el Haddadi to celebrate that his team won the Europa League, reflects the Berber (Amazigh) identity, and is a symbol that unites this North African ethnic group from Libya to the Canary Islands.
Sevilla were proclaimed champions of the Europa League for the sixth time by beating Inter Milan (3-2) in the final in Cologne (Germany), in a match in which El Haddadi, originally from northern Morocco, participated in The second half.
The Amazigh flag was designated by the Algerian militant Muhend Besud in 1971, and in 1997 it was approved during the Amazigh World Congress (CMA) meeting in Tafira, Las Palmas, as the unified flag of that ethnic group. The colors of the flag reflect the Mediterranean (blue), North Africa (green) and the Sahel (yellow), where Berber Tuareg communities are also found.
In the middle, the letter zeta is written in red in Tifinagh (Berber alphabet), which symbolizes Amazigh identity. The popularity of this flag has been growing since then, and is currently very visible in political, cultural and sporting events in all areas of majority Amazigh in North Africa and among the diaspora of that ethnic group around the world.
