The 5,000 spectators who made it to the Stade de France to watch the cup final between Saint-Etienne and Paris Saint-Germain got to see an unusually messy match.

PSG managed to take the lead through Neymar who caught a return on a shot from Kylian Mbappé in the 14th minute before chaos broke out.

Because in the middle of the first half, there was a really upset atmosphere after Saint-Etienne's team captain Loic Perrin put in an ugly hijacking on Mbappé who writhed in pain immediately after the blow. Immediately a big quarrel broke out where several players in both teams were involved.

After the situation calmed down, four yellow cards were handed out and a red card to Perrin, who at first had only received a warning. But after a video review, the assessment changed and Perrin had to leave the plan.

Replaced damaged

After a short tussle with the defender, Pablo Sarabia finally tucked the ball home.

Just minutes later, Saint-Etienne's Mahdi Camara went way too hard and late towards Leandro Paredes and there was a messy atmosphere once again. Camara, however, got away with just a yellow card.

At the end of the match, you could see in the TV broadcast Kylian Mbappé jumping on crutches in the aisle. The right foot was wrapped and placed in a support rail. Mbappé went out to the substitutes' bench where he could finally see PSG win the match and the cup title through the 1-0 goal he himself was involved in.

The President in place

The goal was the only one of the match and PSG thus took their 13th cup title in total.

Before the match, the team had a short chat with President Emmanuel Macron who was present. The president, who was equipped with a mouth guard, walked around happily and greeted everyone on the field.

The Cup final is the first major football match in France since the corona pandemic paused all sports.

The French league, Ligue 1, starts next season on August 22.
