The Chinese "Evergrand" Real Estate Investment Group announced that it started work to build the largest soccer stadium in the world with a capacity of 100,000 spectators, in the city of "Guangzhou" in the south of the country, despite the pandemic of Corona, which rock the world health and economy.

The Chinese group said construction work on the Guangzhou Evergrande soccer stadium, which is called "Lotus Flower" stadium due to its design, began on April 16 and would cost about 12 billion yuan ($ 1.69 billion) to complete it.

She added that this stadium will host the matches of the Guangzhou Evergrande team belonging to the Chinese League, and will exceed the capacity of Barcelona's "Camp Nou" stadium to become the largest stadium specifically built for football.

But North Korea's Rongrado May 1 stadium, built for many purposes, will remain the world's largest with a capacity of 114,000 spectators.

The group said they chose to design the lotus as a traditional Chinese flower, and confirmed that the designer, Hassan Sayed, based in Shanghai, was behind the design.

The stadium will feature entertainment, commercial and dining areas, and is likely to be completed by the end of 2022.

The company said it has decided to build the stadium because China does not have enough football stadiums, and confirmed that it hopes this facility will help give a boost to Chinese football.

The group said it plans to build two additional stadiums with a capacity of about 80,000 spectators in China, but it has not yet completed designing the stadiums.

China is ranked 76 in the FIFA rankings.
