European Union Football Association (UEFA) president Slovenian Alexander Ceverin confirmed on Monday that local leagues across the continent are ready to resume activity behind closed doors, in an attempt to limit the damage caused by the outbreak of the emerging Corona virus epidemic.

Covid-19 caused the suspension of various sports competitions around the world, without excluding the vast majority of European national championships and continental competitions of clubs and teams that were suspended indefinitely. Wifa also had to postpone the European Cup 2020 finals until the summer of next year.

Chevirin considered that the resumption of competitions would be an important step towards returning to normal life and avoiding the huge financial losses of the championships.

"I think there are options that could allow us to resume and complete the cup competitions," Ceferin said in an interview with the Italian newspaper "Corriere della Sera".

"We may have to resume the matches without an audience, but the most important thing is to play the matches," he added.

"It is too early to say that we cannot complete the season. It will be a terrible effect on clubs and championships. It is better to play behind closed doors rather than not playing at all," Cheverin said.

"In such difficult times, this would bring happiness to people and a feeling that normal life had returned, even if it was only watching matches on TV."

"All activities are organized to start again, and everyone needs to find their life," the Slovenian said. "If safety measures are respected and if the authorities give the green light, training can resume as usual. We will need more approvals in order for the matches to return," he said.

If the tournaments return soon, the Weva president explained that the Champions League and European League (Europa League) can be played in parallel, without setting a specific date for the finalists.

Chevirin stressed that he does not support the continuation of the season until September and October because "it will have a significant impact" on the coming season 2020-2021 (...) We can finish, but we must respect the decisions taken by the authorities. The priority is the health of the fans, players and coaches. "

In response to a question about the countries that decided not to complete the season, he said that the UEFA "will review the cases. Such decisions were not taken alone."

"Football is interconnected. We have seen how important it is to work in concert with respect to UEFA and the local leagues. The executive committee will review the cases," he added.

"The local championships are the revenue base for clubs at the national level. If they are completed until the end of them, the financial consequences will be limited," he added.

"On the other hand, UEFA will lose a lot of money due to the postponement of the European Cup 2020," he concluded.
