The next wifi standard will detect movements. Our box can therefore be transformed into a presence detector to monitor our interior during our absence. There will therefore no longer be any need for sensors.

The wifi standard will evolve and the next version will obviously be faster and safer. A novelty challenged Anicet Mbida, it should make it possible to detect movements.

This is very important because it means that all boxes that will use this new wifi will have a free presence detector. We can therefore turn them into an alarm without having to install a whole bunch of sensors at home. It is wifi, all alone, which will detect intruders.

The system will be sensitive enough to know if a person is still breathing or has just fallen. So we could even use his box to monitor a baby or to be warned when an elderly person has a bad fall. All this, again, without any sensors. Just with wifi.

But how can we detect movements with wifi?

In fact, it works much like a speed camera. Wifi is a wave bouncing everywhere. As soon as someone moves, it will disturb the signal, so we can detect it.

It will still have to be calibrated to prevent the slightest fly from triggering the alarm. And as the wifi goes through the walls, it shouldn't confuse what is happening at home with what is on the street or with the neighbors. This is the objective of this 802.11be standard, the future wifi 7.

Do we know when it will be available?

The first kiosks are already starting to be marketed. But they are not certified, because the standard is still being defined. It is a fairly long process since it must ensure that any device and any software works perfectly together. However, this will not happen for three or four years.

But until then, still expect to see boxes with non-standardized movement detection.
