  • Olivier Pickeu, sporting director of the club for 14 years, was laid off this morning.
  • The president of Angers Sco, Saïd Chabane, decided to step back and had appointed a deputy chairman yesterday.
  • Olivier Pickeu is appreciated by the managers of Stade Rennais who have not yet chosen the successor of their former president, Olivier Létang.

It is an earthquake which has just shaken Angevin football.

Olivier Pickeu, sporting director of Angers Sco (Ligue 1) since 2006, was laid off this Tuesday morning "as a precaution" according to a spokesman for the club, by its president Saïd Chabane.

According to Le Courrier de l'Ouest, the players were informed of this decision this Tuesday afternoon at the end of the training session.

Significant gains on many players

Olivier Pickeu (50) joined the club in 2006, in the luggage of former president Willy Bernard. In 14 years as a sports director, the former Lille and Toulouse player had built up a large address book. In recent years, he had distinguished himself by making significant capital gains on players bought at low prices and then resold at a much higher price (Jeff Reine-Adélaïde, Karl Toko-Ekambi, Famara Diédhiou, Romain Saïss, Flavien Tait… ).

With coach Stéphane Moulin, and Saïd Chabane, he was the third member of a triumvirate which, since the president took office in 2011, had obtained good results in sporting and financial terms. For several months, and in particular since the sale this summer, at the end of the transfer window, of Jeff Reine Adélaïde in Lyon, the atmosphere was no longer in good shape between the three men.

A new deputy director

The Angers Sco club, whose first team has just won three consecutive Ligue 1 victories, is currently going through a period of turbulence. Charged in a case of alleged sexual assault on four employees or former employees of the club, the president of the club, Saïd Chabane, decided to step back and appointed Monday March 9, Fabrice Favetto-Bon, deputy president.

“It was urgent for me to gain height. What I experienced, I do not wish my worst enemy. I will now be able, while remaining president of the club, to concentrate on my defense. "

During his enthronement, Fabrice Favetto-Bon (50), a former manager of Paris Saint-Germain and Le Mans FC, current director of France Galop, had however placed his trust in Olivier Pickeu. "He is responsible for the club's sports policy, I will be more in a supervisory role. "

Stade Rennais in ambush

Did Olivier Pickeu take this appointment badly? Was he eyeing the post? The club refuses for the moment to any explanation on this layoff. We know, however, that his profile is very appealing to the leaders of Stade Rennais, whose president, Olivier Létang, was removed from office at the beginning of February. Nicolas Hovlek, who has just left his post as deputy director general of AS Monaco, seemed the best placed to replace him but the layoff of Olivier Pickeu could reshuffle the cards.

Said Chabane, 99% owner of the club, assured him that he did not intend to withdraw. “I have always said that I will open the capital in 2022, by finding people who will allow us to take a leap up. Olivier Pickeu does not seem to be one of them.
