The 14th edition of Strade Bianche, the cycling race which was scheduled for Saturday in Siena, has been canceled due to the coronavirus epidemic, we learned on Thursday from several teams involved.

The decision was taken after a final meeting between the organizers and the local authorities, the day after the measures decided by the Italian government to fight against the spread of the epidemic in the European country most affected by the coronavirus.

Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-Sanremo pending

Several teams had announced their package during the past 48 hours, most often as a precaution. Among others, Mitchelton, EF, Jumbo, Groupama-FDJ and Ineos. On Wednesday, RCS announced the cancellation of the cyclo-sport organized the day after the professional race on Sunday, bringing together some 7,000 participants.

Its director Mauro Vegni spoke on Wednesday of a "B" plan consisting in postponing the major races from March to another date in the season, in June after the Giro or in September. For the time being, the organizer has not announced its decision on the two other WorldTour races planned for the coming weeks in Italy, Tirreno-Adriatico (March 11 to 17) and Milan-Sanremo (March 21).
