Cagliari sacked his coach Rolando Maran on Tuesday after 11 games without any victory in the Italian Football League, a process that caused the team to drop from fourth to eleventh in the table.

The dismissal of Maran, who remained in office about a season and a half, came after a 3-4 defeat against Roma and only four days after he received a high acclaim for his work from club president Tommaso Gelini.

The club said on its website that it had "absolved Maran of his responsibilities" in leading the team. Cagliari also dismissed two Maran aides.

There was no indication that Maran’s job was in danger during an interview that Gellini gave to Novo Sardinia last Friday.

"I was fortunate in meeting a real man who brought with him a wonderful work culture. Before he met him, my opinion was very positive about him. But after I saw him work, my respect for him increased," Gelini said.

The turning point of the Cagliari season was on December 16 when it led Lazio 1-0 in a match that would have won it jumps in the rankings above the capital team, which was third at the time.

But Lazio scored two goals in stoppage time to clinch a 2-1 victory and Cagliari had not won any victory since then.

Lazio now top the Italian league standings with 62 points, 30 points ahead of Cagliari, which is now closer to the relegation zone.
