Few, if any, had probably two weeks ago tipped that 21-year-old American Sofia Kenin would win this year's first Grand Slam, the Australian Open.

Prior to the competition, Kenin had never been past the second round in Melbourne, and had never gone further than the fourth round in a Grand Slam at all.

Early break

But she has gone from clarity to clarity during the tournament, and today won the dramatic final against the former world set, Spain's Garbiñe Muguruza.

The first set won Muguruza after breaking Kenin's set already in the third game and won the set by 6-4. But in the second, it was Kenin who broke up pretty early, winning the set by a full 6-2.

Took over in third

The final was thus decided in a third and directly decisive set. And there, Sofia Kenin was the strongest. The decision came just over halfway into the set.

At the score 2-2 Muguruza had three full break balls, but after some fantastic points, Kenin suddenly had the advantage - and then won a long point.

Double error of Muguruza

In the game afterwards, Kenin continued to sail on the energy she got in the previous game, and played until a break ball. And although Muguruza is five years older and significantly more experienced (she has two Grand Slam titles, among other things), she shuddered, beating a double.

A double fault was also in her next servegame, and Kenin thus won her first Grand Slam title and barely looked to believe her eyes when the victory was complete.
