Manchester United revealed Thursday details of the signing of Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandez from Sporting Lisbon, in a deal that team coach Olli Gunnar Solskjaer said was a strong addition to the team.

The "maniu" said that the player moved for five and a half years, with a provision allowing extension for an additional year.

The Portuguese team said on Wednesday that "Red Devils" are paying 55 million euros to obtain the services of Fernandez, although the final value of the deal may increase significantly.

The Portuguese club said - in a statement - that the agreement on Fernandez, 25, includes "performance-based additions of up to 25 million euros."

And in the details of these additions: five million euros for the number of matches he plays, the same in case of qualifying for the Champions League, and 15 million euros for the goals scored by Bruno Fernandez, in addition to 10% obtained by Sporting from any future sale of the player.

Fernandez scored 63 goals and made 52 in 137 games for Sporting, and has been linked by speculation over the past six months with the move to Old Trafford.

"We have been watching Bruno for many months, and everyone here has expressed his admiration for his skills and what he can add to the team," Solskjaer said in a statement.

He continued, "The winter holidays come at a great time to help Bruno get along with the squad and get to know his team mates."

Fernandez played 19 games for Portugal and was part of the squad that won the first edition of the Nations League last year.

Fernandez became United's first deal in the winter transfer window, seeking to bolster the midfield in the absence of the injured duo Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay.

"Playing for Manchester United is unbelievable," Fernandez said. "I worked very hard to get to this moment, and I promise the fans will do everything I can to help the club achieve more titles and success."

Fernandez is the third Portuguese player to join United from Sporting after two stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Nani.
