It was Williams' 73rd WTA title and since Williams took his 23rd Grand Slam title in Australia three years ago, the American has lost five finals.

- I played against a very good opponent and I think it was a very good match, Williams says, highlighting his American teammate.

I feel fortunate and blessed to be able to be so healthy that I can play here, says Williams who has had major illness problems, not least in connection with her pregnancy a couple of years ago. It was the first title since Williams became the mother of Alexis Olympia.

"Glad to be able to do something I love"

- I've been playing for so long and been involved in so much and I'm so happy to be able to do something I love, Williams told Reuters and has been the perfect runner-up for the Australian Open starting January 20.

There have been many matches in Auckland since she also played doubles with close friend Caroline Wozniacki who ends her career after the Australian Open, then just 29 years old.
