• Event: Carlos Ghosn's rocambolesque escape from Tokyo to Lebanon
  • Profile Carlos Ghosn, the cost killer who drove Renault Nissan and Mitsubishi

Carlos Ghosn was the brain of his own escape. That assures the former head of Renault-Nissan, who said Thursday that he "alone", without help from his relatives, had organized his escape from Japan to Lebanon. “The allegations in the media that my wife Carole and other members of my family would have played a role in my departure from Japan are false and liars. I only organized my departure. My family had no role, ”said Ghosn who will give a press conference on January 8 in Beirut to give explanations.

Ghosn, a fugitive from Japanese justice, has been in Lebanon since Monday after escaping from Japan clandestinely. He did it on a private plane after stopping in Turkey . Born in Brazil and of Lebanese origin, he has three nationalities: French, Lebanese and Brazilian. Lebanon has no extradition treaty with Japan . The former head of Renault-Nissan, who was arrested in Tokyo in November 2018 accused of "corruption" and "misappropriation of public property." He was on probation pending trial scheduled for next April and was prohibited from leaving Japan.

It is unknown how he fled from Japan undetected and who helped him. The Japanese television network NHK reported that Ghosn had two French passports and could have used one of them to legally enter Lebanon. French media speculates that the former senior executive could have turned to a private security company to exfiltrate Japan.

Interpol has asked the Lebanese authorities for the preventive arrest of Ghosn pending his extradition, surrender or other legal action. "It is not an international arrest warrant," Interpol explained. The international police organization is not competent to require Lebanon to arrest it.

France will not extradite him

The Japanese and Turkish authorities have opened two investigations, seven people being arrested in Turkey for allegedly facilitating their escape.

The escape could have a good season in Lebanon. But if you return to France you are guaranteed that you will not be extradited to Japan , despite the open causes. «France never extradites its nationals ... but that does not prevent us from thinking that Mr. Ghosn should not avoid Japanese justice; they are simply the same rights for everyone, the French nationality is protective of its citizens, ”explained the French Secretary of State for the Economy, Agnès Parnier-Runacher, who recalled that “ nobody is above the law ”.
