The British Andy Murray will not participate in the next Australian Open (January 20-February 2) due to a groin injury, his representative Matt Gentry announced on Saturday. The 32nd former world number 1, currently 125th in the world, was injured in the Davis Cup in Madrid in mid-November. That injury "has not healed as quickly as expected," Gentry said.

"I have worked very hard to be in a state where I can play at the highest level, and I am disappointed that I cannot play in Australia in January," Murray said. "Unfortunately, this injury is more complicated than we thought and as a precaution I must remedy it before returning to the tracks," he said.

He will not return to the slopes before February

In addition to his retirement for Melbourne , the 32-year-old tennis player will also not participate with the British team in the first edition of the ATP Cup , at the beginning of January, just before the first Grand Slam of the year.

Murray returned to the ATP circuit in 2019 conquering in October in Antwerp (Belgium) his first title since 2017, about nine months after a second operation on the left hip that had led him to announce between tears, in January 2019, his possible track withdrawal.

On December 12 he canceled his two weeks of preparation in Miami for the 2020 season due to his groin injury. It is difficult for Murray to return to the tracks before February, so his first tournament in 2020 could be that of Montpellier .

The Scotsman will need a full recovery if he wants to win again Wimbledon (2013, 2016) and the US Open (2012).

Five-time finalist at the Australian Open , the last time in 2016, he also has two Olympic golds and a Davis Cup (2015).
