Söderling replaces Johan Hedsberg who, after having brought Sweden up from 40th to 15th place in the ranking, thanked for himself.

- Being able to lead the best players in the country is an honor, so it was a pretty easy decision. I have not thought about this, but when the question came, I immediately felt that I wanted to do this. I want it to go well for Swedish tennis, says Robin Söderling in a press release.

The former world star won 14 of the 18 Davis Cup matches he played between 2004 and 2011. Now he will try to make sure that the Swedish tennis gentlemen enter the high school division and may be in the playoffs in Madrid in November next year.

- I have played many great games during my career and have an experience that I can benefit from in this assignment. In terms of results, our Davis Cup team has done fantastic results under Johan Hedsberg's leadership. I take over when we play for a place in Madrid. It feels fantastic even though Chile is a tough opposition, says Söderling.

The DC captaincy assignment is his first tennis leader job since ending as Elias Ymer's personal trainer last year.

Söderling starts the captaincy job with the qualifying match against Chile on 6-7 March in the Royal Tennis Hall in Stockholm.
