Liverpool released five debutants in the team who had a mean age of 19.5 and were led by U23 coach Neil Critchley. Aston Villa had made ten changes to the team that lost against Sheffield United in the league this weekend.

Liverpool's former youngest starting eleven were in the FA Cup three years ago when the median age was 21.8 years.

It was Liverpool's biggest loss in the League Cup ever. The previous biggest losses had been three goals. 1-4 West Ham (1988) and 3-6 Arsenal (2007).

Statisticians have a little trouble knowing how to relate to this unique match, what should be counted officially or provided with an asterisk.

Despite the huge loss, the casual coach Critchley chose to see it from the positive side. The young hungry team created a couple of nice chances in the beginning but quickly fell below 0-2.

"An unforgettable evening"

- It was an unforgettable evening and nobody wanted it to end. The support we felt was incredible, says Critchley according to the BBC.

Aston Villa's coach was desperate to reverse his team's fortunes in the game, and ordered his team to change strategy.

- It was probably the craziest quarterfinal I have ever seen or been involved in. It was like a non-win for us but it took us to the semi-finals, says Dean Smith.

During the day, Liverpool's first match against Mexican Monterrey will play in the club's World Cup in Qatar. The next match in the Premier League for Liverpool is on Monday Christmas (Thursday next week) when they meet Leicester in an interesting summit.
