Dominic Matteo, former Liverpool central defender, among other teams, underwent an operation because of a brain tumor, Anfield club announced.

A statement from Liverpool announced that the former 45-year-old Scottish international had surgery last Monday and has since been admitted to intensive care.

Matteo played 155 games with the Reds between 1993 and 2000 and then signed for Leeds United . There he helped the Elland Road team reach the Champions League semifinals in 2001 and later was captain of the club.

"The thoughts of everyone in the club are with 'Dom', his family and friends and we will offer our support during this difficult time," said the statement from Liverpool.

Matteo also played with Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City before retiring as a player in 2009.
