French coach Patrice Carteron has been sacked by Al-Ahly, the Cairo club announced on Thursday night, while the most successful team in Africa has accumulated many failures in recent weeks.

Patrice Carteron is no longer the coach of Al Ahly. The decision was announced following the elimination of the Red Devils from the Arab Club Championship on Thursday, after a draw with Emirates club Al-Wasl (1-1).

In a terse statement, Al-Ahly also announced the replacement "temporary" Patrice Carteron, arrived last June at the head of the club, by his former assistant Mohamed Youssef. Dutch coach Michael Lindeman has also been fired, the club added.

The dismissal of Carteron, former player of Saint-Etienne and Lyon, comes three weeks after the defeat of Al-Ahly against Esperance Tunis (3-0) in the final of the African Champions League. At the head of Al-Ahly for five months, Patrice Carteron took the reins after the departure of the Egyptian coach Hossam al-Badri.

He had the heavy task of restoring the blazon of the largest African and Arab club, in decline for several months.
