Luka Modric has won the Golden Ball award as the best player in the world, ending the monopoly of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for the award over the last ten years.

The award was announced by French magazine "France Football" at a ceremony on Monday evening in Paris.

The 33-year-old has already won the Golden Ball, winning Real Madrid's Champions League for the third time, and leading his country to the 2018 World Cup final in Russia for the first time.

This year, the Croatian star has taken over all the international trophies, with the FIFA World Player of the Year award and the European Player of the Year award.

Messi and Ronaldo have dominated the gold ball since 2008 with five times each, an unprecedented record, while Brazilian Kaka was the last to win the award in 2007.
