The commission’s report notes that since 2013, when Xi Jinping became the president of China, there has been a significant deterioration in the human rights situation in the country. In particular, there are currently more than a million Uighurs in political re-education camps, which may be “the most severe oppression of the rights of the ethnic minority since the Second World War”.
The report also says that the Chinese authorities are trying to put pressure on representatives of the Uyghur diaspora in the United States, who allegedly sought help from the FBI.
“It seems to us that the very idea that China, headed by Jinping, can accept the Olympic Games seems to be wrong,” said Chris Smith, a member of the House of Representatives, who contributed to the report.
