After the victory of Real Madrid star Luca Modric in the 2018 Golden Ball award, fans were waiting for Egypt's Mohamed Salah as well as record holder Lionel Messi.

Regardless of the debate over the right to win the trophy, Luca led the team to the final of the World Cup before losing to France. He also helped his side win the Champions League for the third time in a row, and most importantly he broke the dominance of Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi over the last decade.

Earlier this year, Modric won the 2018 Best Player of the Year Award in the FIFA World Cup. He also won the Golden Ball for the World Player of the Year "Russia 2018".

The Golden Ball is an annual prize given by France Football magazine to the best football player. The first edition was launched in 1956, the magazine was behind the idea and the player was chosen to be awarded the prize, but it is now being chosen after a vote by football journalists.

The award was not limited to men this year, with two other awards: the Golden Ball for the best player, the Norwegian player Ada Hagerberg of France and the second prize for the best young player under 21.
