THE THEME OF THE DAY

Brexit decision - the next attempt

A good two and a half years ago, the British decided in a referendum to leave the EU. After a long period of uncertainty, another decision should be made: in the evening, the British parliament wants to vote on a deal that Prime Minister Theresa May has negotiated with Brussels. My colleague Kevin Hagen explains the situation in the text and together with Benjamin Braden in the video.

In May, May had postponed the vote - she had no hope of success. However, their chances are far better: it is likely that the Prime Minister will fail with her deal. The British press sees it similar to the bookmakers. In that case, a second referendum would be an option again. But that would be far too dangerous from the point of view of my colleague Jörg Schindler because it could help the right wing in Europe.

In any case, it is quite possible that Brexit will be deferred in a decision against the deal. That would continue to increase the problems - especially with the upcoming European elections, write my colleagues Markus Becker and Peter Müller.

You can follow the debate and the vote over the evening in the livestream and in the live blog. From 8 pm on, amendments to amendments are expected. These could even prevent the actual decision again. If that does not happen, then follows the vote on the deal.
