THE THEME OF THE DAY

May is fighting for her Brexit deal

Tomorrow evening the decision should be made: The British lower house votes on the Brexit agreement. The day before the vote, the nervousness is great: Prime Minister Theresa May warned against a rejection of the agreement on the exit from the EU: Then there would be no exit from the Union rather than a disorderly.

The EU tried to back May with assurances and persuade doubting House MPs. Brussels will do everything to ensure that by the end of 2020, a trade agreement and the controversial Northern Ireland emergency solution is avoided, it said in a letter from the EU leaders. This so-called backstop is intended to prevent a hard border between the British province of Northern Ireland and the EU member Ireland.

Ex-Brexit minister David Davies is considered to be a possible successor to May. He is certain that the deal will fail and sees benefits in it. And a second Brexit referendum would not solve the conflict, on the contrary: it could leave spirits out of the bottle, which would be hard to control, says my colleague Jörg Schindler.
