France: the issue of pensions still ignites the National Assembly

The Social Affairs Committee of the National Assembly examined this Wednesday, May 31, the bill calling for the repeal of the pension reform. A text that the presidential camp was determined to sabotage. Which he finally managed to do, but at the cost of a new fierce battle with the opposition.

From the first minutes of the meeting, the tone rises and the bursts of voices reach the gardens of the Assembly. Methodically, the presidential alliance, with the support of the LR (The Republicans), empties of its substance the bill supported in particular by the Nupes which, after having seen hundreds of its amendments deleted, decides to leave the debates.

«

They went beyond the Standing Orders of the National Assembly to get their way and not lose a vote. So, the only weapon we have left today is to leave this commission to denounce its artificial nature, "explains Sandrine Rousseau, ecologist deputy, at the microphone of Aurélien Devernoix, journalist in the political service of RFI.

The independent group Liot, which carried the text, is just as outraged, like its president Bertrand Pancher: "This is my 4th mandate as a parliamentarian, I have never seen so many attempts to border the functioning of the National Assembly by the majority.

»

But the president of the Renaissance group, Aurore Bergé, defends the strategy of the presidential camp: "We are in strict compliance with our institutions, the Constitution, our rules of law and our functioning. " And blames the Nupes for the heckling: "We have suffered threats, intimidation, insults, maneuvers, shenanigans. And we just responded with democracy, which is a vote. A vote that was therefore favorable to the Macron camp. The main provision of the text, the repeal of the pension reform, has been deleted.
