The State Security Criminal Court in Egypt decided on Monday to refer the papers of the guide of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Mohamed Badie, and 7 of the group's leaders to the Grand Mufti of the Republic to express his legal opinion on the death sentence, to convict them in a case known as the "events of the platform" and dates back to 2013.
The court set a hearing for September 20 to pronounce on the case, in which 79 accused Brotherhood leaders are being tried.
Among the most prominent referred to the Grand Mufti, in addition to the Brotherhood's General Guide, are Mahmoud Ezzat, acting guide, Mohamed El-Beltagy, Amr Zaki, Osama Yassin, and Safwat Hegazy.
Assem Abdel Majid, a leader of the Islamic Group, and a Salafist preacher Mohamed Abdel Maqsoud, who are being tried in absentia in this case, were also referred in absentia.
On July 27, 2013, clashes erupted in the vicinity of the memorial in Nasr City, east of Cairo, near the sit-in in Rabaa al-Adawiya Square, the largest sit-in by supporters of the late President Mohamed Morsy, between protesters and police forces, known as the events of the platform, killing 80 people and injuring more than 300.
