36 cells, eight of which are prepared for double occupancy. At the prison in Högsbo, there are now up to 44 places in the new detention center. The expansion also means between 35 and 40 new jobs – mainly correctional officers.

Criticism of responsive detention centres

Previously, the Parliamentary Ombudsman. JO, directed criticism that it is responsive in detention centers and that there is then a risk that inmates can communicate with each other. Something that happened at the detention center in Borås last year, where a man now convicted of murder was detained together with another inmate and then allegedly confessed to the murder to him.

"Not responsive here"

Lisa Johansson, a prison inspector who worked on the new expansion at the prison in Högsbo, says that inmates will not be able to communicate with each other between the new detention rooms.

"It's not responsive here. Each room has a decibel requirement attached to it and those requirements are met. So it's not possible to communicate between the rooms," she says.
