The members of the association are very disappointed that there will be no festival.

– Tornedalen Pride is an important event for the entire region and a platform for highlighting issues related to LGBTQIA+ people. It is an opportunity for us to show our pride and solidarity with everyone who fights for their right to be themselves, says Joakim Isaksson Markström.

Wanted to bet

RFSL has in previous years received SEK 10,000 to arrange a smaller Pride festival, but this time they had applied for SEK 150,000.

"We wanted to train teachers and create a bigger festival. We have worked hard to get everything in place, but without the support we need, it is unfortunately not possible to carry out the festival in a safe and sustainable way, says Joakim Isaksson Markström.

"We keep fighting"

Why do you think the announcement of money has been delayed from the municipality's side?

"I think the politicians have had a hard time getting along. It is known that KD has a hard time with what we stand for. Our issues are controversial in Torne Valley. We will continue to fight to make Tornedalen a safe and inclusive place for all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender.

RFSL Luleå and northern Norrbotten County will on June 28 arrange a queer hang out at the sun square in Pajala to compensate for the loss that Tornedalen Pride entails.

SVT is looking for municipal commissioner Ulrica Hammarström (S) but has not been able to reach her.
