At the CSU New Year's reception in Passau on Sunday, former Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer announced that he would no longer run in the upcoming federal election in 2025. The “Passauer Neue Presse” first reported on it.

»I have served for over 20 years and look back on this time with great gratitude. I met a lot of exciting people and did a lot of exciting tasks. “That fills me with joy and pride,” said the CSU politician. He looks to the future “with incredible joy.”

The decision not to run again was a long time coming, he told the PNP. However, he did not want to comment on more specific future plans. Rosemarie Weber, district chairwoman of the CSU Passau-Stadt, told Bayerischer Rundfunk that Scheuer's announcement did not come as a complete surprise.

Scheuer has been a member of the Bundestag since 2002. Most recently, he won the direct mandate in the 2021 federal election in the Passau constituency.

From 2018 to 2021 he was also Federal Minister of Transport. In this position, Scheuer was responsible for the failed car toll. The project - a prestige project of the CSU in the then federal government - was stopped as illegal by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in 2019. As a result, the federal government had to pay 243 million euros in damages to the intended operators. This resulted from an agreement after arbitration proceedings.
