Zelenskyy's visit comes at short notice. The Nordic summit was already underway when it became clear that the Ukrainian president would join them.

The visit is one of the few occasions that Zelenskyy has left Ukraine since the war began. One reason for the visit is likely to speed up military support and ensure that it keeps coming. Finland is about to send its 15th package of military aid.

"I feel that this visit will be very productive," Zelenskyy said at a press briefing alongside his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinistö.

"Decisive for victory"

Zelenskyy also thanks Finland for its continued support and points out the importance of repelling the Russian invasion.

"This year will be decisive for us, for Europe, for Ukraine. Decisive for the victory, he says.

On top of that, he reiterates his desire to become part of NATO.

"We want an invitation," he says.

Kristersson on site

All Nordic leaders, including Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M), are in Helsinki for a meeting with Niinistö. At the top of the agenda are the security situation, Nordic co-operation and continued support for Ukraine.

The government writes in a press release that Kristersson and Zelenskyy will also have a bilateral meeting.
