The Union of Moroccan Writers called on the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication to expedite the creation of the "Artist's Foundation" in order to take care of the social problems of artists.

This came in a statement by the non-governmental union, which is the largest gathering of writers in the country, on the case of the death of Moroccan theater actor and writer Ahmed Jawad.

On Sunday, Jawad died of his injuries after setting fire to his body last week in front of the Ministry of Culture building in the capital, Rabat, coinciding with World Theater Day, and local websites reported that the late artist was protesting against administrative injustice.

"The demand to establish the artist's foundation comes in order to avoid the recurrence of such tragic incidents," the union said. He called for "empowering the cultural body with the necessary capabilities and providing a stimulating and appropriate climate that responds to the expectations of successive generations of Moroccan intellectuals and writers".

"This comes with the aim of improving their legal status, foremost of which is supporting their health, social and material conditions, in a way that preserves and preserves their dignity, enhances their material and moral rights, and motivates them to improve their performance and qualifications," he said.

The Union mourned the theatrical artist Ahmed Jawad, who died at Ibn Sina Hospital in Rabat after 6 days of treatment, and appealed to the authorities to intervene immediately to take care of the family of the deceased, and to provide them with a helping hand.

The Moroccan Ministry of Youth and Culture had earlier expressed its "full solidarity with the playwright and his family for what happened, regardless of the circumstances, backgrounds and motives behind this incident".

Youth and Culture Minister Mehdi Bensaïd said his ministry was working to set up an institution to take care of and support the social conditions of artists.

He added at a meeting in Salé, organized by the "Fakih Tetouani Foundation for Science and Literature" (non-governmental), that the ministry prepared the draft law related to this institution, in order to avoid incidents similar to what happened to the late playwright.
