Several routes are affected, but mainly travel between Stockholm and Gothenburg and Stockholm and Jämtland.

Anyone who needs to make one of those journeys to get home at Easter can only wait to book their ticket.

According to SJ, there is nothing that can be done to get around the problem.

- We must have the entire Swedish Transport Administration's planning so that we can, in turn, make schedules and be sure that the departures will really come for the trips we sell, says Martina Nord.

The Swedish Transport Administration is actually supposed to announce the times for its planned track works no later than 13 weeks ahead of time, but this has been delayed several times in the past year.

- From SJ's side, this is hugely frustrating.

Our travelers want to be able to buy their Easter tickets and it is of course completely reasonable to be able to do so.

Fewer travelers

The Easter weekend is one of the times of the year with the least number of train travellers.

The work commute is reduced and not as many people travel as during long weekends.

That is why track work is done then.

The reason why the Swedish Transport Administration's planning is delayed is partly due to the fact that the intensive traffic on the Västra main line makes it complex and partly to the introduction of a new planning system.

A year ago, cracks were discovered in the rails on the Västra stambanan and between Stockholm and Malmö.

Those repairs took four months to carry out and since then the planning has lagged behind, says Bengt Olsson, press manager at the Swedish Transport Administration.

No forecast yet

But why does it take so long to find out what time the track work should take place?

- It is very complex.

We have many departures on the Västra main line.

In addition, the freight trains, commuter trains, regional trains and express trains all run at different speeds.

Therefore, planning must be double-checked and safety checked carefully.

We are working intensively to sort this out now, says Bengt Olsson.

Even though Easter is only a few weeks away, the Swedish Transport Administration cannot give a date for when the planning will be complete and the train companies can release their journeys.
