This "night to light" march of citizens wearing colorful costumes, masks and chanting slogans, is due to end in Westminster with a speech by Julian Assange's wife, Stella.

Julian Assange was one of the finalists for the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in December.

This prize was finally awarded to the "brave people of Ukraine" facing the Russian invasion.

The 51-year-old Australian citizen is being prosecuted in the United States for having published from 2010 more than 700,000 confidential documents on American military and diplomatic activities, in particular in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Arrested by British police in 2019 after seven years in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, Julian Assange is awaiting the examination of his appeal against the decision of the British government to extradite him.

"This is one of the most appalling crimes of our century," said Naila Kauser, a 41-year-old activist protesting in London with a lantern in her hand.

"He is being punished for revealing war crimes and corruption that people had a right to know about."

"He denounces war crimes and he is being prosecuted for having done so," lamented Lucia Spadetta, a 74-year-old Italian teacher, fearing that the British government would give the green light to his extradition to the United States. UNITED STATES.

Julian Assange is being held in the high security Belmarsh prison in the suburbs of London.
