Two senior officials of the World Health Organization in combating the "Covid-19" pandemic will leave their posts next week, according to a letter issued by the Director-General of the organization, which was seen by "Agence France Presse" the day before yesterday.

The two officials who will step down are the Indian doctor Soumya Swaminathan, the scientific chief of the World Health Organization, and the Brazilian Mariangela Simao, assistant director-general for access to medicines and health products.

Swaminathan and Simao were among the top UN health agency officials who have led global efforts to coordinate the response to the pandemic.

Also, the former French Minister of Health and Presidential Envoy for Multilateral Affairs, Agnes Buzyn, and former British Minister Jane Ellison, Executive Director of Foreign Affairs and Governance, will leave the organization.

The departure of the four women was announced in a letter sent by the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, to their colleagues, as part of the amendments he is making to his team after his re-election to a second five-year term in May.

Tedros said in his message, "I want to express my appreciation and respect to the members of my leadership team, whose appointment expires on November 30."

No new names have been announced yet.
