Iranian authorities ordered the closure of schools in the capital, Tehran, today, Wednesday, due to high levels of air pollution, which causes hundreds of deaths annually.

And it quoted - according to what was reported by the Iranian Student News Agency, "ISNA" - Abd al-Maliki, deputy governor of Tehran, as saying, "All classes in Tehran province, with the exception of the cities of Pardis, Firouzkoh and Damavand, will be held virtually on Wednesday."

The decision was taken by the committee responsible for monitoring pollution in the capital, and Al-Maliki said, "According to expectations, the current weather conditions are likely to continue until Thursday."

The authorities have closed schools several times this year in Tehran, as well as other provinces.

The Ministry of Education closed primary schools on Monday due to air pollution, which causes about 4,500 deaths every year, according to the Iranian Ministry of Health.
