Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ruled out approving a short truce with Russia, saying that it would only lead to worsening matters, while British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made a surprise visit yesterday to the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, announcing the provision of an air defense package to Ukraine.

Zelensky said, “Russia is now looking for a short truce and a respite to restore its strength.

This can be seen as an end to the war, but such a deadline will only lead to an exacerbation of the situation.

He added, "A truly real, lasting and sincere peace can only be achieved through the complete destruction of Russian aggression."

Zelensky confirmed that the Ukrainian forces repelled about 100 attacks in the Donetsk region in the east of the country within 24 hours, with the intensity of the fighting continuing, adding that the very fierce fighting continues in the Donetsk region and there is no relenting in the intensity of the fighting.

The Ukrainian president called for new sanctions from the West in light of the increasing Russian missile attacks against Ukraine, and Zelensky accused Moscow of violating the final declaration of the G-20 summit on the Indonesian island of Bali, which Russia also supported, in many points.

He pointed out that the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and the area surrounding the port of Odessa on the Black Sea and more than 12 other regions suffer from a shortage of electricity after relentless Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, after the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmyhal announced that the Russian attacks on infrastructure disrupted half of the system. Energy in the country, and called in a joint press conference in Kyiv with the Vice-President of the European Commission, Valdis Dombrovskis, the European Union to provide more support in the face of this situation, especially in order to purchase additional quantities of gas.

At the beginning of winter, many Ukrainians will suffer a major or complete power outage at the time of the first snowfall in the country last Thursday. Millions of Ukrainians were deprived of electricity.

In addition, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made a surprise visit yesterday to the Ukrainian capital to hold talks with Zelensky.

Sunak announced that Britain would provide a 50 million pound ($59.4 million) air defense package to Ukraine, including anti-aircraft weapons and anti-drone technology, while stepping up humanitarian support to face the harsh winter ahead.

Zelensky published a video recording of the meeting with Sunak, and said in a post on the "Telegram" application: "Together we are stronger, and we will achieve the desired results."

The video clip showed Zelensky receiving Sunak, while Sunak said on the social networking site “Twitter” that “Britain knows what it means to struggle for freedom.

We are with you all the way.”

The British Prime Minister said that his country will continue to support Kyiv in its war with Russia until peace is achieved, adding: “I am here to say that the United Kingdom will continue to support you.

We will stand with you until Ukraine achieves the peace and security it needs and deserves.”

In a related context, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister General Volodymyr Havrilov expressed optimism about the arrival of his country's forces in Crimea by the end of next December and the possibility of ending the war inside Ukraine by the first half of next year 2023.

In an interview with the British TV station "Sky News", Havrilov said yesterday: "My feeling is that this war will end by the end of spring," adding that it is not excluded that the Ukrainian army will advance to Crimea by the end of this year.

Moscow had annexed this island to the Russian Federation in 2014.

Havrilov believed that it is possible for the war to drag on for some time from a military point of view, and stressed that restoring more areas is just a matter of time.

A Ukrainian official expects the war to end by the end of the first half of 2023.
