The survey was sent out to nearly 4,000 forest owners in the county, of which 756 responded.

A majority - 75 percent - of them answered that they were interested in "different management methods", that is, to find out more about methods other than tract harvesting with clear cutting.

A little more than half – 53 percent – stated that they wanted to use their own forest without logging.

Lack of information about alternatives to clearcutting

But most - around 70 percent - stated at the same time that they had received very little information from their advisors about clear-cut alternatives.

The explanation is that many of the advisers are timber buyers connected to forest companies without incentive to inform about clear cutting, says Gunnar Hafmar.

A view that is shared by many in the forestry industry, including forestry professor Per Angelstam at the Swedish University of Agriculture.
