As a global multi-energy company, Repsol is leading the energy transition and has set itself the goal of being net zero emissions by 2050. To this end, Repsol is committed to a model that integrates all technologies for decarbonisation, based on improving efficiency, the increase in its capacity to generate low-emission electricity, the production of fuels with a low carbon footprint, the development of new solutions for customers, the circular economy and the promotion of cutting-edge projects to reduce the carbon footprint of the industry .

In this transition, technology is playing a fundamental role in

Repsol's transition to a zero-emissions business.

As the company innovates in areas such as biofuels, synthetic fuels, and renewable energy sources, its business strategy and

processes are changing significantly

.

By extension, the systems that support these processes also need to change so that the business can continue to drive innovation and operational efficiency.

Repsol, as one of its first steps, migrated from a strategy based on a complex local infrastructure, to adapting a "cloud-first" strategy based on a multicloud strategy.

This bet also had the advantage of reducing its energy consumption in IT.

Why was the decision made to migrate to the cloud?

Repsol knew that this would give its data and applications the necessary scale, agility and power to help move towards a more sustainable future.

Among these applications is a broad SAP ERP environment, which has been the basis of Repsol's main business activities for years.

Migration to the cloud was not the only change that Repsol

had in mind.

The company also took the opportunity to

upgrade the broader infrastructure that supports its SAP environment

.

This is primarily due to two factors: avoiding moving legacy infrastructure and applications to the cloud, and embracing SAP's real-time data platform, in order to achieve greater agility during the next few years of business transformation.

When the company began its transition to the cloud in 2018, it decided to adopt SUSE's open source operating system for SAP as a cornerstone of this change.

Virginia Molina Jiménez, Head of SAP Basis Services at Repsol, explains:

"Moving our SAP environment to SUSE in the cloud offered clear cost and performance advantages. What really cemented our decision was the fact that SUSE and SAP are fully aligned in when it comes to technology. For example, every new release of SAP comes first on the SUSE operating system. We thought we could benefit from this close collaboration and were confident that SUSE for SAP offered the ideal platform for our SAP environment. All in all, we felt that going forward, SUSE was the best solution for our ERP environment."

SUSE, which has just turned 30, has been one of the pioneers of open source business solutions, helping thousands of customers around the world adopt key technologies in digital transformation and at the core of of everything that happens in the world of information technologies;

from small smart devices to the most demanding hybrid architectures.

Diego Ríos, general director of SUSE for Spain and Portugal, talks with El Mundo about the importance of open source for present and future innovation in organizations.

"At SUSE, we believe that every business is in a continuous process of digital transformation, and that transformation can only be accelerated through the strategic benefits that open source business solutions offer. Witnessing that process throughout Over the years has allowed us not only to understand how to create value solutions from the sum of components created by a large community of developers, but also how to capture all that knowledge to offer the best support to our customers".

"From SUSE we provide products that are capable of managing critical environments: from satellites and autonomous vehicles, to the most demanding business environments. 85% of the world's SAP ERP applications run on our operating system. These are involved in most of the transactions of global commerce and are always critical systems for the customers that operate them; being the foundation on which these systems are based and the de facto standard in such demanding areas, demonstrates SUSE's commitment to be a strategic partner in any type of environment, as the example of Repsol shows",

points out Ríos.

It is, without a doubt, the best ally for Repsol to continue innovating and help promote the company's goal of zero emissions thanks to energy and carbon reductions.

In short, it is about offering a package of integrated tools that help to carry out a simple implementation, avoiding configuration problems and thus reducing operational risk.

For Ríos, "

software vendors' commitment to openness and interoperability of solutions must be unequivocally demonstrated through their product offerings. SUSE has historically been a strong advocate of that open and interoperable approach. For example, we have solutions that can manage the life cycle and security of practically any Linux operating system on the market on any infrastructure, be it local data centers, cloud environments, managed services, 5G sensors, etc.."

All the advantages associated with open source software would not be enough to design a future strategy without a key component: trust.

The various players in the open source market have put a lot of effort over the years to show that these solutions can be trusted and are on the same level, in terms of security, as equivalent proprietary solutions.

As Diego points out

"Being open to public scrutiny, having nothing to hide and working on open models and standards is the key, not only to build the most secure software, but also to react faster to any type of attack or threat. At SUSE we have understood that this trust is so important that it shouldn't just be based on how we work or our word. That's why we've put our products and processes through the scrutiny of the most respected certification bodies. As a result, our operating system is the one that It has the largest number of security certifications on the market, certifications that cover everything from internal components, to deployment and hardening procedures, through the certification of our software creation and packaging process for complete control,end-to-end, of the entire software supply chain"

At the forefront of technology

More broadly, migrating to the cloud

allows Repsol to eliminate on

-premises hardware, systems and infrastructure, thereby

reducing operating costs

and paving the way for

significant reductions in energy spending and carbon emissions

.

It also paves the way for new forms of innovation, which has allowed the company to deploy new technologies more quickly and easily, thereby empowering more agile ways of working.

"We are on the way to building a more agile and sustainable business

," says Virginia.

"Implementing SUSE for SAP is an important step in this transition, helping us design a technology infrastructure that can more quickly respond to new demands and ease our transition to becoming a zero-emissions company."

Virginia adds:

"Thinking about the multi-cloud future, thanks to the fact that we have SUSE for SAP, our applications work reliably and efficiently at all times, allowing us at Repsol to dedicate ourselves to what we do best: contributing to society with our diversified offer of energy solutions"

.

On November 16, SUSE will celebrate its SUSESEC event in Madrid, where SUSE experts together with clients and partners specialized in cybersecurity, such as Ramsés Gallego, will show how to build secure IT infrastructures, applying the best practices tested in the most demanding environments.
