While Nancy Pelosi breaks the silence and describes herself as "shocked and traumatized" by the assault on her husband, still hospitalized, it is "online" that the US right puts forth many doubts.

On social networks,

conspiracy theories

follow one another, even going so far as to question whether the assault really happened.

"There are very strange details," reads a forum devoted to former White House strategist

Steve Bannon

.

"I wonder if Pelosi tried to stage his mini January 6," wrote and then canceled

Greg Kelly, the anchor of the right-wing network Newsmax

.

According to various exponents of the American far right,

the timing of the alleged incident is suspicious

, a few days before the mid-term elections.

"The left is going crazy not only because we don't believe Paul Pelosi's implausible story but because we're laughing at how ridiculous it is,"

, the right-wing commentator, author of several documentaries.

"This means we are no longer intimidated by their false stories. They no longer have control over us," adds Souza.

The story of Nancy Pelosi

Democrat congressional leader Nancy Pelosi said she was "traumatized" by her husband's violent assault on Friday at their California home.

"Our children, our grandchildren and I are heartbroken and traumatized by the aggression that endangered our Pop's lives," she wrote in a letter posted on Twitter.

Paul Pelosi was attacked in his house by a man with a hammer, who was actually targeting Nancy Pelosi.

"We are grateful for the rapid response from law enforcement and emergency services and for the medical care he is receiving," she added.

Paul Pelosi, 82 - operated on and hospitalized - was home alone, while Nancy Pelosi was in Washington.

San Francisco police said

officers found the attacker at the couple's home

just before 2.30 am, where he and Paul Pelosi were fighting for a hammer.

"The suspect snatched the hammer from Paul Pelosi and violently assaulted him," San Francisco police chief Bill Scott told reporters.

He later claimed that Paul Pelosi was punched at least once.

Police identified the attacker as David Depape

, 42 years old.

Scott said Depape will be charged with attempted murder, assault with a weapon, burglary and other minor offenses.

"It was not a random act (...) it was intentional," he stressed.

The suspect "asked to see me and brutally attacked my husband Paul," wrote Nancy Pelosi in her letter.

According to American media citing sources close to the family, the attacker told Paul Pelosi that he would tie him up pending the arrival of his wife.

Local media had previously reported that the individual shouted "Where's Nancy?"

Speaking after voting yesterday afternoon in his home state of Delaware, President Joe Biden said he didn't know "for sure, but apparently this (assault) was aimed at Nancy."

According to the police quoted by the Wall Street Journal, the suspect had manifested far-right positions on social networks.

In recent months, many personalities have warned about the resurgence of violence against the American political class: Republican senator Susan Collins has gone so far as to declare that she would not be "surprised" if an MP or a senator were "killed".
