The horror in the heart of the festive district of Itaewon, in the South Korean capital: a multitude of bodies lined up on the sidewalk, still dressed up for the Halloween party, but now lifeless.

Thousands of people crowded the narrow streets of the district, in the night from Saturday to Sunday, until visibly causing large crowd movements which ended in tragedy.

The tragedy happened around 10:20 p.m. local time.

Many people collapsed on top of each other in a narrow street, said the chief of the Yongsan fire station.

While the authorities have launched an investigation into the origin of this deadly crowd movement, in the immediate future, around 140 ambulances have been deployed to take care of the victims.

The South Korean president asked to prepare the hospitals to receive the wounded.

Yoon Suk-yeol chaired a crisis cell and ordered the deployment of emergency medical teams to the scene.

The videos show rescuers performing heart massage in the middle of the street.

The toll could rise as relief operations continue.
