Macron: There is a chance for peace in Ukraine

French President Emmanuel Macron said Sunday at the opening of a peace summit in Rome that "peace is possible" in Ukraine when "the Ukrainians decide it."

"At a certain time, and according to the development of things, and when the Ukrainian people and their leaders decide on their own terms, peace will be built with the other side, around a table," he added in a speech at the opening of the summit organized by the Catholic Society of Sant'Egidio.

The French president spoke of "a possible peace, provided that the Ukrainians have decided its terms and timing."

Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine last February, Macron has been keen to communicate with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, unlike other Western officials, especially US President Joe Biden.

Friday in Brussels, he renewed his call for Kyiv and Moscow to return to the negotiating table when the matter becomes "acceptable" to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but also "as soon as possible."
